Ryanair defers Aer Lingus Bid

The Ryanair bid for Aer Lingus has been dropped until the outcome of an enquiry by the EU competition commission is announced.
Do you think that the merger was a good idea? I have mixed feelings about it. I think that in some ways companies should be able to compete freely without government interference. However I am sure that if companies become monopolies they can become complancent and hike up prices.
