Business Shows: Excuse for day out or of real value
Written by Karen Bryan
I am attending the Business Scotland Show in Edinburgh on the 1 & 2 November. I mainly want to attend the seminars to get different perspectives and new ideas. I think it can be very isolating working at home on the computer for hours in your own business. You can get a bit stale and bogged down. It is also interesting to meet and talk with other business people. While all this may be true, is it a good use of time to spend 2 days at a show. Think of all the work I could do if I concentrated for 2 days?
Have you found these types of shows to be beneficial?

I have to say that I thought I got a lot out of my 2 days at the Business Scotland show. I attended most of the seminars. I enjoyed that talk by Oli Norman of DADA
http://www.dada.co.uk.
He has runs this events and PR company with such obvious enthusiasm, sense of humour and fun. If only work could be such a pleasure for us all. Office politics are banned, there are learning grants for staff.
The concept of fun at work was also apparent in the talk Serious Play by Barclay Price of Arts and Business Scotland
http://www.aandb.org.uk
His proposition that as adults we lose or suppress or ability to plany rang true with me. He illustrated that serious play can be beneficial to organistations.
Tremedous joie de vivre was also exhibited by Sheila Devlin Thorpe of BIzazz

I felt as if she had the talent to be a stand up comedian. Not that I mean to detract from her apparent marketing skills and knowledge.
Yo Karen. I loved your energy and enthusiasm at the show. It’s a hard thing when you’re self employed to give your time for free. But we do have to expose ourselves to learning opportunities. And, hey! consider the returns on networking.
